A day of snow and pancakes

Filip H.F. "FiXato" Slagter

My day

Today has been a fairly good day. It’s important to tell myself that every now and then, and to remind myself of the good experiences.

Start of the day

My SO had a fairly late start of her work shift today, so I could sleep in for a bit, for which I was grateful. :)

Lunch and plans gone awry

Content Warning: Food (non-vegan, vegetarian-safe)

For #lunch I felt like whipping up a quick batch of pancakes, and our 1½ year old son, #BeardGrabber, sounded excited by that prospect as well as he kept saying 'panner' and 'kaker' in his cute little way. He even seems to know that it needs flour, as he also said 'mel' and pointed at the cupboard in which it is kept. He never ceases to amaze me. <3

However, as I was making the batter, and was looking for the whisks and spatula in one of the drawers, I noticed water had been leaking into said drawers… By the time I had emptied and cleaned those out, it felt too late to have #pancakes for lunch, so I grabbed some quickly toasted buns instead, which BeardGrabber fortunately was also happy to eat some from.

Afterwards I finished the batter, and set it aside for #dinner instead.

Taking a walk

Since I had to throw out some trash anyway, and BeardGrabber and I both could use some fresh air, I got us both dressed up warmly. I am looking forward to much warmer weather, not just because I prefer sunlight and dry warm weather in general, but also because getting not just me warmly dressed, but especially our son, is a time-consuming task that can make it a bit less enticing to go out.

Eventually we managed to get out the door though, and after a short detour to the garbage bins, we carefully walked hand-in-hand down the ice and snow/sludge-covered surface. He enjoyed being lifted up for a quick peek in the postbox, while I made a mental note to pick the post up on the way back.

We briefly stopped at the nearby school’s football field, where he looked at two kids kicking a ball back and forth, while I quickly spun a #Pokéstop and caught a couple of #Pokémon for my #PokémonGO #dailies. He helped me 'feed' my buddy Pokémon, something he find funny: “mer bær!” (“more berries!”), and we carried on walking, with him occasionally being carried (“opp, opp, pappa!”) (“up, up, daddy”) instead because he got tired, or because of wind blowing in his face.

Playground

Content Warning: current events (COVID19)

We walked past one of the various nearby small #playgrounds, where a couple other kids and their parent were playing, but due to the #COVID19 situation going on at the moment, I didn’t feel comfortable letting him play there as well..

Walking back home

Since he was asking me more and more to be carried, we made our way home again, with me carrying him for the most part. While I can’t always tell that he’s growing just by looking at him, because it goes so gradually for us, I can definitely tell by carrying him; I need to start doing some weight training 😅.

Quickly picked up the post, and carefully carried him up the slippery slope again.

'More snow!'

When we got home, he didn’t want to go inside though. Instead we stood next to the snow/ice sludge along the shovelled path, and pointed at the snow: “snø, snø, snø!”

So, I grabbed a snow shovel, and deposited more and more snow in a pile in front of him as he happily asked for more snow: “mer snø, mer snø, pappa!”, occasionally grabbing a handful himself, only to drop it again as it soaked through his wool gloves.

Eventually I managed to get him inside again without him showing disappointment, either because he actually was satisfied with the amount of snow now, or because I distracted him by asking him to show me where door and the living room was.

So helpful…

Once inside, and having taken off our outside clothes again, I noted that I needed to grab some new dry wipes soon before changing him.

I try to make it a habit to say out loud what I (plan to) do, as a way of making conversation with him, exposing him to language, as well as practising #Norwegian myself as it isn’t my native language. The little one clearly noticed though, and took it upon himself to open the bottom drawer of the dresser, and proudly handed me a new box of wipes. :D

(Of course he next also tried to hand me other things from that same drawer that we didn’t yet need. xD)

Bless you, dear son, for being so eager to help and please. <3 May you never lose that wonderful trait, as well as hopefully not have people take advantage of you because of it.

Dinner

Content Warning: Food (non-vegan, vegetarian-safe)

As my SO returned, I could focus on preparing dinner: frying up the pancakes I had made a batter for earlier that day.

Unfortunately the yeast I used for it, hadn’t worked as hard as I had hoped. Not sure if I had used too hot milk, or if it had been standing in a too cool spot, if the yeast was too old, or if this variety is just not as active; that’s something for future experimenting.

I had been eyeballing the batter mostly, and since we were out of plain flour, I used a mix of rye flour and fine-ground whole-wheat flour. Not sure if it was the different flour, or unbalanced ingredients because of the eyeballing, but it felt like I didn’t quite get the texture of the batter right this time. Ended up adding 2 more eggs and some more milk in the end, but they weren’t the best-looking pancakes I’ve made. Juggling 3 different pans while trying to find the right temperature for each of them also didn’t help. ;)

Fortunately they tasted just fine, and little BeardGrabber happily ate them some with blueberry jam. :D

Bedtime and late-night plans…

After a bit of struggling with brushing his teeth, which is more difficult at some days, and a breeze on others, my SO put him to bed and ended up falling asleep herself too after a heavy day at work. I myself took a nap on the sofa, because I had been looking forward to some undisturbed night-time #coding, as SO having a day off tomorrow means I can take a nap when needed.

I’m so lucky to have an SO who is so considerate of my quirks… <3 you.

…often don’t go as planned…

I woke up somewhat more refreshed a bit after midnight. Browsed the #Fediverse and played some #MarioKartTour to get my daily amount of free coins, and then sat down at the computer to do some coding.

However, I noticed a friend I hadn’t spoken to in a long time had showed up on #IRC, and I ended up catching up with him for longer than expected instead. :)

Not what I had planned, but I don’t regret it for a bit! It was fun reminiscing and trying to piece together memories of our first (and only?) face-to-face meeting many years ago based on some pictures I found in my archive.

He also wasn’t aware my SO and I had become parents, so he was happily surprised, and of course I had to share.[1] some more photos with him. ;)

This blog post

After he had signed off again, I figured it was too late to get any actual coding done, so I decided to finish this #blog post instead.

I’d already started on it somewhat during the conversation, but wanted to add more to it, and actually finish another #longform blog post for the first time in too long.

My previous blogs were on #Blogger, but I kinda want to try to go back to basics, and focus more on the content rather than styling; writing in plain text is something that hopefully will help me with that.

Markdown

Relevant toot

Of course, I do want support for some styling, which is why I’m using #Markdown as basis, but the more I am writing in it, the more I feel like I am missing some features, such as #contentWarnings, metadata, definitions, semantic sections, and heading IDs; at least in #CommonMark. But that is a topic for another time, perhaps. :)
